"THE WORLD OF DOGS - AN ARTIST'S PERSPECTIVE"
Dog Artbook - The small idea that has become more than paws for thought!
About the Project
Sometimes I have ideas that can be small and sometimes I can have ideas that are very ambitious........This #DogArtbook project is definitely one of the most ambitious I have come up with to date. The thought of creating a book of portraits of the pedigree dogs in the country was something that really excited me. So I set about to contact as many people as possible each day sending out many emails to Breeders, Kennels, Breed Clubs etc. It has been a monumental task so far and I have had some amazing feedback from those involved and others keen to follow the project. I initially created a marketing campaign and begun contacting people. The amount of emails sent from my hotmail was only a drop in the ocean compared to the number of pedigree dogs across the world.
The objective...
For me the main objective wasn't to make money as the portraits were already offered at a reduced price, and the actual art books are sold around the cost of manufacturing them so for me its was not a money making project but something I was very passionate about doing. To put my art in a publication showcasing the country's top examples of as many breeds as possible was a real joy. From the smallest of breeds to the giant breeds - no two dogs are the same and I took it as a personal challenge to cover as many breeds as possible and show the various characters within each breed. I choose not to go for the typical show poses (for those of the dogs who are top show dogs) to draw from, but to draw relaxed compositions of dogs happy in their daily lives
My training is in Illustration, and print and press is something I studied, so publishing a book is something that has come quite naturally to me. I aim to spread the word about my project far and wide and I have gained a lot of interested in the project from the press. As far as I can see no other artist has done such a project and I feel it is very interesting to do a project such as this, taking you away from the normal collection of show posed photographs. The project has got such an amazing response it was also opened up to non-show dogs, pure bred pegidree pets are now included in the book. The aim is to show the character of as many breeds as possible within the book.
I have found in life and especially in my art career that nothing is given, good ideas are as cheap as salt but executing them as best you can is an art form in itself. Promotion and marketing is also one of my strong points and I am hoping this project is a huge success. The book has been featured in a couple of magazines and papers to date and I was over the moon when The Crufts Mag featured an article on the project in their November issue of the magazine (please see my press page for photos).
Thanks to everyone who is involved in making this dream become a reality.
